Texas Legislative Session

As many of you have seen in the recent news, education is a hot policy topic among Texas lawmakers this legislative session. Governor Greg Abbott and many lawmakers in leadership are focused on passing a private school choice bill called the Education Savings Account (ESA) Bill. The ESA bill is expected to become law.

While the media will focus on the ESA bill, much work is also underway to support more funding for public schools, including public charter schools. Governor Abbott has prioritized teacher pay raises and more funding for public charter schools. His specific language regarding charter funding follows:

“Increase public school choice opportunities by increasing funding for open-enrollment charter school facilities.

With a $24 Billion budget surplus and a keen focus on improving education for Texas students, there is optimism that our school will benefit from this unique moment in Texas history.

As a member of the Texas public charter school community, you have an opportunity to make your voice heard to your lawmakers. The Texas Public Charter Schools Association (TPCSA) provides updates and advocacy alerts to keep families of public charter school students informed about the activity at our state Capitol and engaged in advocacy. If you would like to opt-in to receive TPCSA’s emails and alerts, please click here.
